Research Fellow / Senior Research Fellow

University Of Southampton

Description

Research Fellow / Senior Research FellowPopulation, Health & Wellbeing (PHeW)

Location: Highfield Campus Salary: £30,942 to £49,553Full Time Fixed Term (until 31/12/2022) Closing Date: Tuesday 10 August 2021 Reference: 1433321WR

The WorldPop programme (www. worldpop.org), based at the University of Southampton, is seeking to recruit up to 2-3 Research Fellows and / or Senior Research Fellows to assist with spatial demographic analyses in a number of low/middle-income countries around the world. We require enthusiastic statistical analysts to work on high resolution predictive mapping of population distributions and demographics based on household survey, census and bespoke survey data, along with high-resolution geospatial covariate data layers. The work will be foundational to collaborative work with organizations such as UNFPA and GAVI, and feed into programs such as GRID3 (www. grid3.org), which WorldPop is a core partner in. The outputs will be used by governments as a basis for activities such as vaccination delivery planning, routine healthcare planning and census preparations. As well as joining the vibrant and well-connected WorldPop team, the post-holder will lead high-impact publications.

The project work to be undertaken by the candidates will include:

(i) Developing spatial statistical approaches, including uncertainty quantification, for the production of high-resolution gridded estimates of population counts and demographic characteristics in the absence of national census data across countries, through the integration of geospatial covariate layers and survey data

(ii) Contributing to the design of sampling strategies to obtain additional survey data

(iii) Supporting national statistical offices in the analysis of existing census data or future census planning.

(iv) Contributing to the development of training materials and delivery of workshops aimed at strengthening the capacity of external partners (i.e. at national statistics offices, international agencies) in the methods developed.

(v) Disseminating research outputs regularly through high impact publications, conferences, and open access data dissemination and visualisation platforms.

Given the above tasks, strong experience in spatial statistical analysis, computer programming, Bayesian statistics, GIS and demography is therefore, a significant advantage. Applicants should have a PhD in a statistical/computational/quantitative discipline, or relevant experience.

The Senior Research Fellow position will be expected to take on some line management, lead design and implementation of some of the activities outlined above and contribute to leadership within the WorldPop group. Experience in leading projects, managing teams and winning funding is therefore desirable for this senior position. The project work will be highly interdisciplinary and as such there is some flexibility to accommodate expertise from a range of cognate disciplinary backgrounds (e.g. geography, demography, statistics, computer science, ecology, epidemiology etc). A willingness to travel overseas occasionally is also necessary. Fluency in French is desirable.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

The candidate will work under the supervision of Prof Andrew Tatem and other scientific directors at the University of Southampton. The positions are fixed term until 31 December 2022 with a strong likelihood of extension.

Informal enquiries may be made to Dr Andrew Tatem A.J.Tatem@soton.ac.uk

Please include a covering letter, full CV and 2 letters of recommendation in your application.
